I work at a grocery store on Sundays. Today we had a regular come in talking about how we were going to be attacked again! It's the 10th anniversary. And then started ranting about a car that's apparently been in our lot (we're part of a strip so there's also an Old Navy and other stores that share out lot) for 4 months and how you never know it could be them and the car might explode today. We tried to assure her it was probably just a broken down car. Wouldn't shut up till we got someone to call to have the car removed. Last time we saw her one of the higher up managers was on the phone with her ranting at him. I also over heard a fellow employee talking about how they wouldn't come from the sky this time how they would tunnel under us and BOOM!!!

I know many countries have told them flat out they would not be permitted to enter their borders. I would assume any at least semi-private property would be off limits (stores, non-gov't. buildings, etc.) <br /> <br /> Even though it is against the law (as I'm sure everyone knows), personally, I'd take my chances. And if enough people were to do that, you'd have a riot on your hands, which isn't good. <br /> <br /> A few months back I believe they were protesting a funeral, and they were attacked by a large crowd. They had to be evacuated and the van they were being driven away in had things thrown at it and windows smashed in. I know Shirley Phelps has gotten spit on, and their church was bombed. When you think about how much of an impact 9/11 had on everyone, you're bound to have some <i>violent</i> opposition.<br /> <br /> As far as I know, their protest is already over. I don't think FOX or CNN covered it, thankfully. Would be interesting to see what happened, though.

They're stupid because of their beliefs and lack of morality, but they're smart because they know that it's technically legal to stand on the corner and spout off homophobic or other offensive commentary. They also know it's illegal for someone to assault them for doing it, so they kind of have the law on their side the whole time.

Some of the things that have been said in this thread I find quite offensive. Ante I think hit the nail right on the head. Katrina isn't always (though in my area it IS still ) remembered the way 9/11 was because 9/11 wasn't a natural disaster. <br /> <br /> 9/11 was a direct attack on American spirit and our very way of life. It wasn't an act of liberation, it was in fact an attempt to destroy that. And who persevered? Us. <br /> <br /> Now, I am somewhat of a skeptic. I believe there were internal elements to the 9/11 attack, as evidence of the way the towers collapsed (which, if were anticipated by the firefighters, precautions would have been taken), the way some support columns were severed at a perfect 45 degree angle (which is used in demo to assure buildings collapse straight down, and don't collapse on surrounding areas) and positive testing for explosives and thermate (which explains the perfect cutting). But that's another topic entirely.<br /> <br /> I think it's horrible that people would say "oh, well more people died during such an such". Would that not then be testimony to the heroism of those involved? Over 50,000 people worked in the towers. The death toll was something like 2,800, firefighters and police officers included.<br /> <br /> When I was younger, I was like many of you "why are we going through this again?", but when you look at that destruction again, you see the way the planes just evaporate into the buildings and pictures of people who made the decision to jump rather than suffocate or burn and literally <i>explode</i> when they hit the ground. It's horrifying. <br /> <br /> I didn't lose anyone in 9/11. Doesn't mean it doesn't affect me. As far as I know, no one in my family was ever a slave. Does that mean I don't find the whole notion of it horrible, offensive and a tragedy? Of course I do!

we were shocked the same as everyone else. but i think that for the most part we weren't as affected by it. like we didn't lose so many of our fellow brits. <br /> there are lots of documentaries and things on television about it but it's not commemorated in the same way as in the us, obviously.

IMHO, the reason why the original 9/11 is such a big deal when compared to events such as Katrina, is because Katrina was a natural disaster. Things like that happen. I am in no way downplaying what happened there, or anywhere else Mother Nature takes a toll but what happened on September 11th was an attack. It wasn't something that happens because the earth moves a certain way. <br /> <br /> I'm sure the years after Pearl Harbor were awful for those involved. They probably waited every waking moment, expecting another explosion or attack. During the war, they remembered in their minds the Pearl Harbor was why they were fighting. So we, now, remember closely why we are over seas fighting this war. I'm sure as the years go by, people will forget. No one should forget any of these events. <br /> <br /> And I can't explain why no one makes a huge deal over here about the bombing in the UK, because I don't fully know how they responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. <br /> <br /> I don't think there will be an attack on Sunday. Things will play out as normal. Nothing will happen. People are just getting all nervous. (at least I hope nothing happens, lol, since I'll be in NYC in Sunday.)

Emirates and I feel the same way too. It didn't affect us either and no offense to anyone involved, but we both feel it's getting a little...I don't know what the word is... that it's brought up every year and so many documentaries being shown on television about it. In London there was a bombing and I don't recall there being a huge fuss about it. Since about the year after it happened.<br /> Yes, that one was on a smaller scale, but it was big for the UK.<br />

I feel the same way. We've had other tragedies, more recently.<br /> <br /> Yes, I am aware this was a terrorist attack, but so was Pearl Harbor. We don't talk about that every single year.<br /> <br /> Eventually the hype will fade (probably once we get out of the war), and I'm hoping at that point we'll just have a "20th year, 30th year, etc" anniversary, and then eventually it just becomes history that our children learn.
